Our club is a social club. We organise a rally each month on a weekend and we also have a mid week run once  a month on a Wednesday
We are always looking for new members to come along and join us. So if you have a veteran, vintage or classic car we would love you to come along and join us

2021 HALF-WAY RALLY

Over the long weekend in June we had the annual halfway rally. This year our club played host.   We had members from Bellbird Auto Restorers, Central Coast Antique and Classic Motor Club, Tamworth & Dist Antique Motor Club and our own Newcastle and upper Hunter club.

Each day commenced at the club rooms with morning tea.
Day one
We headed over to the Catalina restoration project at Rathmines for a tour of the facility and to see this fabulous restoration in progress.

In April 2013, after a seven year worldwide search, a Catalina Flying boat (PBY-5A) was located at San Juan Airport, Puerto Rico.  The aircraft, which has become known as ‘Our Girl’, was built in late 1943 for the US Navy.  Post war she was sold into private hands and the RCMPA purchased her from the Orinoco Mining Co.

In poor condition after years of exposure to the weather, Association volunteers made numerous trips to San Juan to work on the logistics of dismantling and shipping the aircraft to Sydney.  Prior to shipping, there was many hours spent in cleaning (ready for Australian quarantine inspection) and finally the aircraft was in four manageable sections and shipped over several months to Sydney.   

Restoration commenced in May 2014, with three volunteers, to date over 16,000 hours of volunteer hours have been logged and volunteer numbers have grown to seventeen.  It is anticipated that another 4500 hours will be required to bring the aircraft to static display standards.

The aircraft will be brought back to WWII specifications, with the addition of side waist blisters, bow turret and the tunnel gun hatch.  Wartime radio equipment, navigation and pilot instruments will be on display.  Painting of the exterior fuselage and upper wing surfaces will be in a camouflage pattern, dark sea grey and a dark insignia blue.  The underside wings and lower fuselage will be matt black.

Day 2
After filling up on coffee and cake again at the club rooms we headed to the Wirraway Aircraft Museum. This is a private museum and a very interesting collection. We were given a tour of the facility and listened to some great stories.

We then headed over to the Hunter Recreational Flying Club where a fabulous BBQ lunch was provided for us. Another tour through the 4 hangers to see some privately owned aircraft and hear some great stories

After lunch was a stop at the Hunter Chocolate Factory for some indulgence and possibly a few purchases of some very fine chocolates. 

Day 3

All in all I think everyone enjoyed themselves and the weekend was a success.
The weather was certainly very kind to us

2021 CMHC RALLY  TEMORA NSW
Woo Hoo!!!   We have managed to complete our first big car rally away since covid hit so long ago and I would like to share our journey with you all.
16 of our club cars gathered for this event and we were joined during the rally by 6 cars from the Hastings Auto restorers Society.
Due to the threat of floods our journey started heading towards Denman instead of Sydney as was initially planned and we spent our first night at Bathurst.  This time of year is stunning in Bathurst with the leaves changing colour and signs of autumn are everywhere.    We spent two nights in Bathurst first visiting the National Motor Racing Museum, after a few mandatory laps of the track had been undertaken. Then a visit to the Lachlan Valley Railway Society in Cowra and the Lambing Flat Chinese gardens rounded out our time there.
Then we hit Temora for the 4 day CHMC annual rally. There were some fabulous cars on display at this rally. Of note was a 1913 Little “4” which was just sensational and was definitely my favourite car on display. It even had its gas lamps lit and was amazing to see such an old car in such beautiful condition.
After fare welling our Temora hosts, we hit the road for the extended journey home. First stop the Junee Liquorice and Chocolate factory where we all indulged, then we hit Gundagai and wandered this lovely old town.   It is so nice doing these long car rallies as we get to visit so many beautiful old country towns which are now bypassed by highways, freeways and the M1 around the country. So it is fabulous to get off the main drag and explore these gems which are normally overlooked when traversing from A to B in quick time.
We worked our way into the high country  and had a great visit at the Snowy Hyrdo T3 power station in Tumut, where we learnt all about Hydro, then lined the cars up for some happy snaps.  No trip to the high country is complete without a stop at “The Big Trout” which is actually quite cool. Though it was very sad to see the extent of the fires and the devastation. Below the snow line most vegetation is recovering quite quickly but above the snowline it is a different story. Almost nothing has grown back and there are hundreds of kilometres of dead trees that look like they will never recover. It is very sad indeed. Then we were treated to an amazing lunch and tour of the Cooma Car club. This is an excellent facility that has been bought by a club who has some very industrious and entrepreneurial members. We all left with car club envy of their amazing Museum set up and workshops. We stayed at Tumut for 2 nights exploring yet another beautiful area. Most of us paid a visit to the Tumut broom Factory who have been Manufacturing handmade millet brooms since 1946. It was fascinating to watch the brooms being made by hand from start to finish. I think we all purchased at least one broom each. I heard quite a few muttered comments from daring (foolhardy) husbands about their wife’s new mode of transport! LOL This is the very last broom factory in Australia and I am pleased to say the family have no intentions of closing down. It is great to see some old ways being preserved still.
From Tumut we turned toward the coast and arrived at Narooma which is a beautiful and relaxing area.  Our few days here was spent wandering the region visiting Tilba Tilba and Cobargo as well as wandering the Narooma foreshore and making friends with the local seal and stingray population.  After saying farewell to Narooma we stopped in at the Batemans Bay Heritage Museum.  This is a nice step back in time. The museum is done well and has a bit of everything, not just cars. It is a credit to the hard working volunteers who run it.   Then it was off to another museum, this time the Fleet Air Arm Museum, for a look at all things shiny bright that fly in the air.    The following day saw us visiting yet another museum; the Australian Motorlife Museum.  The guides here were very keen enthusiasts and many a yarn was told about the treasures housed there.    After that we all dispersed our separate ways to head home.
It had been a really great rally and massive thanks has to go to Dennis Crossman who did an extraordinary job of arranging everything.   The whole trip ran smoothly. Some new friendships were formed and old ones reignited after the long lockdown of Covid. These annual rallies are a great way for our club members to really get to know each other and forge great and lasting friendships.  I would like to say thank you to all our traveling companions for a wonderful time. John and I thoroughly enjoyed everyones company and had a great time on this trip. The addition of visiting quite a number of fabric shops to feed my quilting passion was a double bonus.   LOL.
